A New Yorker who first toured as a trumpeter with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers; Mangione basically gave up the instrument for the flugelhorn (a brassy brother of the trumpet) in the 1970s. He single-handedly made the flugelhorn cross-over jazz/pop/classical cool. He is to the instrument what Tim Weisberg is to the flute and Leo Kottke to the 12-string guitar.
